About Us
Model Maker Space CIC is a Sunderland-based community interest company dedicated to improving men’s mental health and wellbeing through creative model making and meaningful social connection. We are the only organisation of our kind in Sunderland and the wider region offering an inclusive and therapeutic approach that uses hands-on creativity to support vulnerable men experiencing poor mental health, trauma, loneliness and crisis.
Our organisation was founded on a simple idea: creativity, shared purpose and human connection can act as lifelines to those who are struggling. Model making provides a powerful and practical way to break down barriers and reduce the stigma many men face when talking about their mental health. Our work is shaped by extensive engagement with local people ensuring that what we offer responds directly to local needs and reaches those most at risk.
We provide structured, accessible and inclusive weekly sessions where participants can engage in model making, painting and working with raw materials. These creative activities offer more than just a hobby. They provide a safe and non-judgmental environment where men can begin to open up, build trust and rebuild confidence. Sessions are designed to promote routine, social connection and emotional stability while supporting the development of functional skills such as literacy, numeracy and digital skills. Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace and where appropriate step into volunteering roles to build further confidence.
We work with a wide range of individuals including veterans, ex-offenders, older men experiencing loneliness, fathers and male carers, men with autism or neurodiverse conditions, LGBTQIA+ men, BME communities and those living with long-term illnesses such as Parkinson’s and Motor Neurone Disease. Our programme also provides tailored support for men affected by unemployment, financial hardship, addiction and bereavement.
We also work with families facing deprivation by offering creative and culturally enriching activities during school holidays. These sessions provide parents and children with opportunities to connect, learn new skills and take part in activities that they may not otherwise be able to afford.
We are proud to work in partnership with local health services, voluntary sector organisations and national model making manufacturers who share our vision. Our accessible venue is based in one of the most deprived areas of Sunderland making it easy to reach for people with limited transport or financial means.
Model Maker Space CIC offers more than an activity. We provide a place of safety, acceptance and belonging where people can build something meaningful, rediscover their confidence and reconnect with a supportive community.
